There are two forms known as Complete AIS (CAIS) and Partial AIS (PAIS).

amenorrhoea (alternate spelling amenorrhea): abnormal suppression or absence of menstruation

androgens: the general term for any one of a group of hormones which govern the development of the sexual organs and the secondary sexual characteristics of the male

axillary: underarm

carrier: a person that carries, but does not express, a gene for a particular recessive trait http://androgeninsensitivity.blogspot.com/

chromosomes: threadlike strands of DNA and associated proteins in the nucleus of cells that carry the genes and functions in the transmission of hereditary information

endocrinologist: a medical doctor who studies the endocrine system, hormones and disorders of the endocrine system

gonad: an organ that produces gametes (germ cells), especially a testis or ovary

gonadectomy: surgical removal of the gonads (sex glands). In AIS, this is the removal of the testes. http://androgeninsensitivity.blogspot.com/

HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy: technically this is the replacement of both oestrogen (estrogen) and progestogen by tablet, injection or transdermal patch. Sometimes this term is used even though the only hormone being replaced is oestrogen.

inguinal hernia: A hernia is the protrusion of any organ through the wall of the cavity that holds it. In AIS, an inguinal hernia is the protrusion of the testes through the inguinal canal.

intersex state or intersexualilty: the condition resulting from faulty sex differentiation during the development of the foetus

Mullerian ducts: either of two embryonic tubes that become the uterine tubes, uterus and part of the vagina in the female and that form the prostatic utricle in the male

orchid: a plant that takes its name from the Greek word "orchis" which means "testes." Orchids were so named because of the resemblance of their root bulbs to testes. What emerges from this seemingly masculine looking root, however, is the beautiful flower known as an orchid. http://androgeninsensitivity.blogspot.com/

osteoporosis: a disease in which the bones become extremely porous, are subject to fracture, and heal slowly

phenotype: a person's physical characteristics as determined by the interaction between his or her genotype-quota of genes-and the environment

Wolffian duct: a duct in the embryo that becomes the vas deferens in the male and forms vestigial structures in the female

Undervirilized fertile male syndrome (Mild Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome)

Some AR mutations with mildly reduced sensitivity cause mild undervirilization. Between the Hodenkanälchen found a smaller population of non-epithelial cells, these cells are the androgen-producing Leydig cells. The primary and most well-known androgen is testosterone.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome

Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS, or Androgen resistance syndrome) is a set of disorders of sexual differentiation that results from mutations of the gene encoding the androgen receptor. It has also been called androgen resistance in the medical literature. The nature of the resulting problem varies according to the structure and sensitivity of the abnormal receptor. Most of the forms of AIS involve variable degrees of undervirilization and/or infertility in XY persons of either gender. A woman with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) has a female external appearance despite a 46XY karyotype and undescended testes, a condition termed testicular feminization in the past.

Major changes in the understanding and management of the various forms of AIS have occurred since 1990. Laboratory research has greatly expanded our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the clinical features, including a rare neuromuscular disorder. More importantly, patient advocacy groups for AIS and other intersex conditions have increased public awareness of these disorders, helped revise the understanding of gender identity, emphasized the value of accurate and sophisticated information for patients, and induced physicians to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the surgical corrections attempted in past decades. Surgery is increasingly seen as an elective option even for the more ambiguous conditions.

What is Androgen?

Androgen is the generic term for any natural or synthetic compound

it is usually a steroid hormone, that stimulates or controls the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics in vertebrates by binding to androgen receptors.

This includes the activity of the accessory male sex organs and development of male secondary sex characteristics.

Androgens, which were first discovered in 1936, are also called androgenic hormones or testoids.

Androgens are also the original anabolic steroids.
